Boat teak wood construction - How we build it

Welcome to our construction section of the site. Everyone loves to see what holds our Teak grates together, so below we'll demonstrate some boat teak wood construction. Pictured on this page is a custom built, Teak Cockpit grate for an Oday 27. As with all our grates, this is constructed with the finest quality Burmese Teak available. We even hand pick through present wood inventory for your particular project and select wood that blends the best for the ultimate in finished product.

The base wood cross members for the base measure 3/4" by 3/4". The "Battan's" or the top measure 1 3/8" by 1/2 ", giving the grate a finished height of 11/4". This boat teak wood construction method assures a very strong grid. We often joke you can take two cinder blocks, place one of our grates between it, and set the motor from your car on it.....and it's no joke. If you were to try and break a Teak Battan over your knee, you'll hurt your leg.

As seen in figure 1, we use a few screws to put these together. Every screw is marine grade stainless to ensure a lifetime of use. This particular grate for the Oday 27 actuallly takes 147 screws to build, but as you can see in figure 2, where the grate wraps around the binnacle (steering wheel thingy to you landlubber's)...........No short cuts are taken.

Figure 2 is a photo after the grate has been sanded once with 80 grid sandpaper, sanded again with 120 grid, then the first coat of oil, absolutely beautiful. Figure 4 we are back to the underside where we use a waterproof adhesive to bond an anti-microtic footing to aid in mnimizing slippage. Figure 5 is after the second coat of oil and is ready to be shipped, placed on board, and enjoyed for many year's to come!
